What your child learns
- Understand an equation as a balance — whatever you do to one side, do to the other
- Solve one-step and two-step equations systematically
- Check a solution by substituting it back (the free-marks habit)
- Translate word problems into equations — the skill that unlocks everything
- Connect equations back to the letter-numbers chapter from Part 1
Parent pointer
This final chapter is the payoff of the whole year: letter-numbers (Part 1) + expressions + integers all combine here. It’s also the direct foundation of Class 8’s “Linear Equations”, which schools race through. A child who finishes Class 7 solid on this chapter starts Class 8 ahead of the class.

Quick questions parents ask
My child moves numbers across the = sign and gets signs wrong. Help?
The “transpose and flip the sign” shortcut fails exactly this way when taught first. The balance method — subtract 5 from BOTH sides — never produces sign confusion, and the shortcut then emerges naturally. The video teaches it in that order.
How is this connected to the Tallentex and Olympiad papers?
Equation-forming (“I think of a number…” problems, age puzzles) is a staple of every Class 7 competitive paper. The computing is easy; forming the equation is the tested skill — and it’s exactly what this chapter and our mock tests drill.
